Winter’s descent
The sky is clear like a new mirror,
Birds flying south draw sacred patterns with their wings.
Nomad women, faces touched by many suns,
Their breath white as smoke in the cold morning,
Quickly gather each piece of cold yak dung—
Their hearts already moving fast toward the winter pastures.
Across the wide golden grassland,
The fat herds flow like waves upon the earth.
Farmers’ storerooms are filled with grain,
Nomads’ yards with livestock,
And wooden boxes packed with butter and cheese.
Smiles of hope bloom on every face—
This is the season called autumn.
After autumn comes the time of return.
We think of that warm place called the winter pasture,
Where children laugh and elders tell stories.
From the highlands to the lowlands,
From the far to the near,
All paths lead home—
Back to the winter pastures.

15th day of the 9th month
One wakes to a frost-covered camp. The rooms remain warm, though the common spaces grow harder to heat. The roads are filled with yaks and sheep returning from their summer pastures.
Today marks the full moon — the last day of Norden’s season. As the moon begins to wane, the camp too will fold into the earth, returning to stillness and letting nature take its course. Over the coming months, the animals will graze and give back through their presence, restoring the land that has held us through summer.
